Think Narrow, Go Global: Why Great Brands Aren’t Built for Everyone

Going global can create pressure to broaden your brand—to appeal to more customers, explain yourself more clearly, and make your product accessible to everyone.

Great brands are built through a narrow lens. Instead of asking how to reach the largest possible audience, founders should identify the small group of people they want to matter deeply to—and build relentlessly for them.

In this session, we share lessons from building brands across New York, Los Angeles, and Seoul: why a brand would rather have 100 customers who absolutely love than 10,000 who simply like; how cultural specificity can strengthen rather than limit global appeal; and why community, product, retail, and storytelling should be designed to create superfans rather than mass awareness.

The session will explore how founders can stay culturally and creatively specific while building a company capable of traveling globally.

Who is this for?

Founders and brand leaders building brands or businesses who want to scale beyond their core market without diluting what made people care about them in the first place.

Why can the host lead this?

I’ve spent 20+ years investing in and building consumer brands—from taking companies public and strategic exits to now building ELOREA, a brand rooted in our own Korean story. That experience (and every mistake on the planet) has taught me that the strongest brands don’t try to appeal to everyone—they build deep loyalty with the right people first.

What will you take away?

A practical framework for defining who your brand is really for, deciding what to protect as you scale, and turning a small core audience into true advocates. Participants will leave with a different way to think about growth: not “How do I get more people to like my brand?” but “How do I get the right people to love it?”
