Build the Audience, Then the Product: How a Founder-Creator Gets Gen Z to Actually Care

Most consumer products don't die from bad features. They die because nobody cared enough to look. And most creator audiences never become companies, because there's no product behind them worth installing.

This is a Q&A session. Bring your actual questions. The answers come from two real companies, run by one founder working both sides of the seam: Tally, a habit accountability app that went viral, raised a pre-seed, and got killed anyway - because the friction that made it work was structural, not executional. And lowk, an anonymous social app for high schoolers, grown school by school with creator-led distribution: yearbook seeding, per-school Instagram accounts, AI-memeified mascots, and ambassadors paid in college consulting and letters of rec.

Format: moderated Q&A with real numbers and real screenshots. No slides worth reading.

The questions should surround:

The consumer-founder half:

Distribution before features: the audience is the only moat a two-person team has

Density over breadth: one school deeply penetrated beats ten schools thin

Killing things: how to know when the failure is structural, not executional

The creator half:

Product as punchline: the product arrives as a story beat, never a CTA

Sentiment lives in the gray area: purely positive reads as cringe to teenagers

Ragebait converts poorly: big views, no installs, and the metric to use instead - profile-visit-rate per view

How should the session run?

Who is this for?

Two audiences, in equal measure: pre-seed consumer founders building for Gen Z who think they have a product problem when they actually have a nobody-cares problem - and creators with real audiences who want to turn storytelling into installs for something they own.

Why the host can lead this

I've lived both halves of this session. As a consumer founder: built Tally, a habit accountability app whose launch went viral hard enough to crash our infrastructure - raised a pre-seed, then killed it myself when the monetization math didn't work. Ran lowk's entire go-to-market alone, school by school, starting from my own high school district. As a creator: 100K+ followers, 100M+ lifetime organic impressions, and I write, shoot, and edit all of it myself. I've paid for both a structural product failure and an executional one, and I track the difference between a view and an install.

What you will take away

A distribution-first launch checklist you can run with two people and no budget. How to pick one channel and one community and go deep instead of spreading thin. How to write, shoot, and edit content where the product is the punchline, not the pitch. Which metrics actually predict installs - profile-visit-rate per view, not views. And how to know when to kill the thing.
