How to Find the Best Advice: What Extraordinary Founders and Investors Told Me When I Switched Sides

Beauty and Caring: On Noticing

When I was five or six, my grandfather tried to explain square roots to me because of a time he saw on the clock; years later, an address caught my attention on the way to the beach; the memory of an ordinary childhood dinner eventually became the starting point for a meal I wanted to cook for my parents. In this talk, I'll follow these stories through math, family, and food. They begin with small details: a clock, a number on a map, a bowl of curry. Paying attention to them led me to questions and projects I hadn't anticipated, and gave me ways to share what I cared about with people I love. I'm interested in what happens between noticing something and deciding it deserves our time. What makes a detail beautiful to us? Why do certain memories stay with us? What might happen if we took our small curiosities more seriously? I hope these stories give you space to think about something you find beautiful, an interest you've put aside, or a person you'd like to make something for.

What US Buyers Actually Want from K-Beauty: From Amazon to Costco Shelves

What US Buyers Actually Want from K-Beauty: From Amazon to Costco Shelves Moderated by Jooyoung (Gloria) Kim, who spent seven years investing in K-consumer brands at Signite and is joining Wellnew. Most K-beauty brands start on Amazon, and the ones that break out end up on US retail shelves like Target, CVS, Walmart and Costco. Few founders get to hear how that journey looks from the other side of the table. In this panel, an Amazon operator and a US retail and distribution insider share what buyers and distributors actually look for, and when. Shaun Noh runs his own men's basics brand on Amazon Europe and brings Korean brands to Amazon through wholesale and agency models. Stanford, Army, Startup: Three Turning Points That Shaped Me

From Stanford to Korean army, and now an AI startup, the last five years in my early 20s have been anything but a straight line. During this presentation, I'll candidly share the ups, downs, and unexpected lessons from three turning points that changed how I see myself and the world. Across these three chapters, I began to question whether doing well meant I was actually growing, whether the limits I saw were real or simply unfamiliar territory, and whether I needed to feel ready before taking a first step. I’ll share how those questions changed the way I approach my life, and how recognizing the luck and people behind my opportunities led me to ask what I want to do with them. Along the way, I'll touch on duck syndrome and the feeling that everyone else has life figured out while you're still finding your footing. I'll reflect on how that comparison shaped what I believed was possible for myself, and how new people and experiences helped me question those assumptions. I'll close with what changed when I stopped waiting to feel qualified and became more willing to try, risk getting things wrong, and learn as I went.

From Gamevil and Com2uS to Summoners War: What Korea's First Mobile Game Company in the U.S. In 2006, Gamevil became the first Korean mobile game company to open a U.S. subsidiary. In 2009 it was the first Korean game company to launch on the global app stores, and within a year Zenonia and Air Penguin hit No. 1 on the U.S. App Store. After Gamevil acquired Com2uS in 2013, Summoners War became the first Korean mobile game to pass KRW 1 trillion in sales and has since passed KRW 4 trillion, about 90% of it from overseas, with the U.S. as its largest market. I was on the front line for all of it. I joined Gamevil in its founding years, served as vice president of both Gamevil and Com2uS after the acquisition, and later as CEO of Com2uS. Many founders assume that expanding to the United States begins by leaving Korea behind: moving the team, hiring locally, raising from U.S. investors, and building an American operation from day one. What we learned over twenty years is the opposite. The strongest companies use Korea as a launchpad rather than treating it as baggage. Since founding CRIT Ventures in 2020, I have watched the same pattern repeat across gaming, content, beauty, food, platforms, and deep tech. In this session, I will share a practical framework for choosing among three broad paths to U.S. expansion: Korea-first validation (prove the product and market in Korea first), partner-led expansion (grow through a U.S. partner and local network), and a U.S. base (move key people and operations). We will look at which path fits which company and founder, and how to separate what can be built and validated in Korea from what truly requires local presence in the U.S., with concrete cases. I will also explain how Korean capital can become part of a cross-border strategy, from both the founder's and the investor's side: how we funded and sustained a U.S. business as founders, and what Korean venture funds, policy capital, and corporate investors look for today. Many Korean American and U.S.-based founders are unfamiliar with this landscape, while many Korea-based founders underestimate how these resources can support global expansion. The goal is not one universal formula, but helping each founder find the path that fits their market, team, and personal strengths. Session flow (50 min) First-generation stories: running the early U.S. business through a local partner, preparing for the App Store back in the iPod touch days, and growing while making money instead of burning it Three paths to the U.S.: Korea-first validation, partner-led expansion, and a U.S. base. Which one fits your market, team, and founder Korea vs. U.S. playbook: what you can run from Korea and what needs to happen locally, including hiring (when Korean-speaking talent matters and why in-house interpreters fall short) Korean capital as leverage: how the Korean VC landscape works (early vs. late stage, fund types and their mandates) and how U.S.-based Korean founders can approach it Case discussion and open Q&A in a small-group, roundtable setting By the end, participants will be able to clearly separate what their company should do in Korea from what it should do in the U.S., and build a concrete U.S. expansion strategy.

Think Narrow, Go Global: Why Great Brands Aren’t Built for Everyone

Going global can create pressure to broaden your brand—to appeal to more customers, explain yourself more clearly, and make your product accessible to everyone. Great brands are built through a narrow lens. Instead of asking how to reach the largest possible audience, founders should identify the small group of people they want to matter deeply to—and build relentlessly for them. In this session, we share lessons from building brands across New York, Los Angeles, and Seoul: why a brand would rather have 100 customers who absolutely love than 10,000 who simply like; how cultural specificity can strengthen rather than limit global appeal; and why community, product, retail, and storytelling should be designed to create superfans rather than mass awareness. The session will explore how founders can stay culturally and creatively specific while building a company capable of traveling globally.
